Meet the Education Team!
Calli Buchanan
Background:
I have always been fascinated by nature and animals and knew from a young age that I would pursue a career in science. I earned a degree in Wildlife Science because I wanted to work with animals and even though I have worked with animals both in captivity and in the wild, many of my jobs have involved using my passion for nature and animals to teach people of all ages about science.
Favourite Exhibit: Slow Bubbles because it takes bubbles from something that we see on a regular basis without giving much thought to and propels them to something fascinating that we can easily understand in a scientific way.
Favourite Scientist: Benjamin Franklin. Aside from his numerous contributions to science, Franklin managed to successfully pursue many other interests such as writing, painting, and politics, just to name a few. It is amazing that one person could fit so much into his life, and it shows to me that while some scientists devote their life to the study of one subject, science is not only for ‘professional scientists’ and anyone who makes a commitment to lifelong learning can make a contribution to science. Franklin was a brilliant inventor and he used his skills to benefit others. He said of his decision never to patent any of his inventions: "... as we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours; and this we should do freely and generously." Further promoting lifelong learning, Franklin said “an investment in knowledge always pays the greatest interest.’
If you see me ask me…about having your birthday party at Satrosphere!
Marie Dare
Background:
I have always loved the sciences, particularly the biological sciences as I am passionate about nature and the environment. My main interest has always been in the oceans, and so I studied marine biology and am an avid SCUBA diver.
I believe that education is vitally important for a better tomorrow as people need to be taught to appreciate the wonders of the natural world and how to preserve them for future generations.
Favourite Exhibit: The Orb as it provides an excellent demonstration of how the atmosphere moves due to the Earths’ rotation, and it’s pretty.
Favourite Scientist: Charles Darwin as he is the father of evolution. He once said “How paramount the future is to the present when one is surrounded by children”.
A scientific fact to make you go Hmmmm…
An estimated 50-80% of all life on earth is found under the ocean surface and the oceans contain 99% of the living space on the planet. Less than 10% of that space has been explored by humans.
Maureen Gray
Background:
I have been interested in science for a long time and also love animals, so I did a Zoology degree at Aberdeen University. I have worked with children on a voluntary basis for many years. So working at Satrosphere seemed like a good place to teach children about science.
Favorite Exhibit: The Operating table. It not only helps you learn about parts of the body but also about electricity and circuits. It is good for children and grown ups and makes them concentrate and use their fine motor skills.
Favorite Scientist: David Attenborough – he has been to lots of interesting places, has taught so many people about insects, plants, mammals, birds and fossils. He has been a great influence on many people and I have always enjoyed watching and learning from his fascinating programs.

The Galapagos Penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) is the only penguin that lives north of the equator in the wild; it can survive due to the cool temperatures resulting from the Humboldt Current and cool waters from great depths brought up by the Cromwell Current.
Sophie Elliott
Background:
I have always been fascinated by science and how things work. Growing up the countryside I had a particular fascination with plants and animals and so decided to study Zoology when I left school. My specialties during my course were Marine Biology and Population Ecology. I have been working at Satrosphere since 2008 when I started as a summer explainer and worked my way up, onto the Education Team. I love doing workshops and shows for school groups and getting people excited about science and I really love getting thank you letters from pupils!
Favourite exhibit: Get Knotted – I like puzzles!
Favourite scientist: I have 2 for similar reasons – they made science exciting and made the general public aware of how amazing the natural world is.
1. Jacques Cousteau – he was a man of many talents – film maker, scientist, innovator, ecologist and explorer!
2. David Attenborough – he inspired me to find out as much as I could about the world around me!
